About the work
In this surreal photo collage Gregson imagines the New York cityscape as a giant chessboard, with hands moving the buildings into position. An adaptation of the work was featured next to the Shangri-La stage at the 2023 Glastonbury Festival, as part of an anti-capitalist installation. This piece is a hand-pulled screen print composed of six individual layers, printed in a limited edition of 100 on 350gsm recycled paperback paper.
Maxine Gregson is a contemporary artist and printmaker based in Hackney, East London. Often inspired by music lyrics and literature, her work has been described as ‘Nostalgic Futurism’, and brings together typography, photography, grid layering and vintage motifs to create surrealist artworks that feel futuristic yet familiar. The CMYK printing process she favours helps merge old and new elements together to evoke highly emotive visual stories.
