About the work

Created from Allen’s observations of the moon from Cley Beach, North Norfolk, during the lockdown of 2020, The Moon Series of copper-plate etchings uses white ink on black paper to give an almost 3D effect and incredibly fine detailing. The waning gibbous phase follows the full moon and is the beginning of the moon’s transition back to darkness. It is said to symbolise a time of release, gratitude, and introspection.

Guy Allen is a talented young British printmaker, draughtsman and artist. Working from his studio on the North Norfolk coast, he brings a uniquely experimental approach to printmaking with an exciting mix of colour, gold leaf, and an original, contemporary take on the traditional art of etching. While studying at Central St Martins from 2008 to 2011, Guy discovered the possibilities offered by the printing press on a trip to the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Finding an art form that lent itself so perfectly to his artistic aspirations was a revelation, and he has never looked back. Since then he has won a number of prizes, including the Diana Brooks Prize at the Mall Galleries in 2018.
