About the work
“I’ve been wanting to experiment with white ink for a very long time, and as lockdown has enabled me to look at the sky a lot, and the spring has brought us very clear skies, and the moon has been very clear, I have been looking at it, and it’s a really interesting thing. If you get a pair of binoculars, you’ll be very surprised by how much detail you can pick out with them.” – Guy Allen
Guy Allen is a talented young British printmaker, draughtsman and artist. Working from his studio on the North Norfolk coast, he brings a uniquely experimental approach to printmaking with an exciting mix of colour, gold leaf, and an original, contemporary take on the traditional art of etching. While studying at Central St Martins from 2008 to 2011, Guy discovered the possibilities offered by the printing press on a trip to the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Finding an art form that lent itself so perfectly to his artistic aspirations was a revelation, and he has never looked back. Since then he has won a number of prizes, including the Diana Brooks Prize at the Mall Galleries in 2018. Created in lockdown isolation in 2020, this piece is a copper-plate etching printed in white ink onto black paper.
