About the work

“Waxing Gibbous, 2020, part of The Moon Series created in isolation between March and June. A fascinating thing is the moon.” – Guy Allen

Guy Allen is a talented young British printmaker, draughtsman and artist. Working from his studio on the North Norfolk coast, he brings a uniquely experimental approach to printmaking with an exciting mix of colour, gold leaf, and an original, contemporary take on the traditional art of etching. While studying at Central St Martins from 2008 to 2011, Guy discovered the possibilities offered by the printing press on a trip to the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Finding an art form that lent itself so perfectly to his artistic aspirations was a revelation, and he has never looked back. Since then he has won a number of prizes, including the Diana Brooks Prize at the Mall Galleries in 2018. This piece is a copper-plate etching printed in white ink onto black paper. The waxing gibbous phase of the moon occurs between the first quarter and the full moon, and is said to symbolise a time of preparation.
