About the work
Created for a solo exhibition in 2019, Moon Butterflies began with Allen researching his subject matter in great depth, meeting with a lepidopterist in Hertfordshire and also spending a day observing the different species of butterfly at the Hermitage Museum in South East London. The layout was planned with meticulous care, with much time spent fine-tuning the positioning of each individual butterfly. Etching, hand finished with 24ct gold leaf.
Guy Allen is a talented young British printmaker, draughtsman and artist. Working from his studio on the North Norfolk coast, he brings a uniquely experimental approach to printmaking with an exciting mix of colour, gold leaf, and an original, contemporary take on the traditional art of etching. While studying at Central St Martins from 2008 to 2011, Guy discovered the possibilities offered by the printing press on a trip to the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Finding an art form that lent itself so perfectly to his artistic aspirations was a revelation, and he has never looked back. Since then he has won a number of prizes, including the Diana Brooks Prize at the Mall Galleries in 2018.
