River By Moonlight (After Koho Shoda)

About the work

This contemporary style landscape art print is inspired by a Japanese woodblock print by Koho Shoda, an artist from the Shin-hanga (New prints) movement. Jones used a soft, muted colour palette to help create a serene atmosphere, with the mood from the subdued colours creating an ambient light of the night, the moon and evening sky reflect on the surrounding landscape and curve of the river, and the silhouettes of the trees add to the quiet and stillness of the scene. Jones mixed blues and creams to create a colour blend for the effect of the sky changing colours at different times of day, making each print a variable edition. It is the first print in a series alongside River by Dawn (after Koho Shoda). The piece is hand pulled with screenprint with graphite powder and ink. 

Sherrie-Leigh Jones, a Brighton-based artist and printmaker situated in East Sussex, specialises in crafting envisioned landscape prints that derive inspiration from nature, natural phenomena, and the romantic sublime. Influenced by Japanese prints and movements such as Shin-hanga and Sansuiga, her creations encapsulate an idealised portrayal of landscapes featuring mountains, rivers, clouds, and mist.
