Daniel Remer employs a technique known as light painting to exercise precise control over light and shadow, allowing the lobster’s vivid red tones to stand out strikingly against a backdrop of deep shadows. Remer carefully selects and refines objects to realise his conceptual vision, attending even to details such as the shape of the telephone and colour of the cord. With its metaphysical and surreal undertones, 'Farewell to Surrealism' is often seen as a nod to Salvador Dalí’s Lobster Telephone, yet Remer encourages viewers to bring their own interpretations to the work.
