About the work
Untitled (Bucephalus) depicts Black Jack, the rider-less coal-black Morgan-American Quarter Horse which accompanied the funeral procession of John F. Kennedy. Bucephalus was known as Alexander the Great’s horse and was one of the most famous horses from antiquity. The horse was massive and impossible to tame until he came across Alexander the Great. Robert Longo’s charcoal drawing in his signature hyperrealistic style give this image of the modern day Bucephalus a three-dimensional quality, enhancing the majestic qualities of the horse. The velvet like texture created on the horses body is from the working and re-working of charcoal over a period of time. It is one of four images released to accompany the artist's 2017 book 'Charcoal'.Signature: Signed and dated in pencil at the lower right of the image, edition number lower left.
