About the work
The oil painting signed in red in the left corner is a head study of a boxer, raw and ravaged by what is before him. The stoic heroism of Howson's subject is detailed by the artist's use of heavy lines, contorted nose and dark set yet eyes, eyes which have not lost their sparkle. It is a painting that screams of quiet resilience. Robert Heller describes Howson's work as, "..founded in humanity, especially the human face."
