White paper butterflies, folded with meticulous precision, fill the picture plane in a dense, unbroken formation. Each one is identical to the next, anonymous, uniform, part of a larger whole. Then, in the upper corner, a single orange butterfly disrupts the field. Second Sole is a work about visibility, the quiet tension between conformity and singularity. The lone coloured form does not shout; it simply is, and in being so, asks us to look more carefully at everything around it. The white mass, once read as background, becomes a subject in its own right: ordered, collective, and quietly beautiful. A collaboration between Du and Doug, the piece draws on the Japanese tradition of origami as a meditative, repetitive act, folding as both craft and contemplation. The deep shadow box frame heightens the sculptural quality of the work, casting soft shadows that shift with the light and animate the static field.
