About the work

The charcoal drawing on craft paper 'Pigeon lll', was created by Hick’s early in her career. It is signed on the lower right-hand side of the image. Now, known for loosely rendered sculptures of animals, mythological creatures and humans, Hicks' strong drawing practice has led to numerous international exhibitions with her work now found in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Hakone Open Air Museum in Kanagawa, Japan, and the Castle Museum in Norwich. Nicola Hicks rose to prominence in 1995 when she was awarded an MBE for her contribution to the visual arts. The materials used by the artist are unconventional, mirroring the sheer speed, with which she works. These include chalk, charcoal and craft paper from a roll. Through this choice, Hick’s is able to draw whatever creature that is currently bursting out of her imagination.
