About the work
The Lonely House is a sparsely populated print based on the 1926 drawing “House on Clifton”, which is currently at the city of Salford Art Gallery. As one of Lowry’s more serene landscapes- away from the busy industrial scenes “The Lonely House” pulls together the signature colour pallet of white skies and rusty red architecture. But, this time revealing the space around the subject. The period for this artwork’s creation is a time that is said to be one of the loneliest for the artist. Lowry described the period of painting as a time filled with” stress and tension” and that the works created within that time were “all based on myself”. A related anecdote for the piece is when Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw, Mayor of Manchester between 1975 – 76, who met Lowry in 1967 at dinner told him she had purchased this painting. The artist then drew a small sketch of the work on her napkin.Signature: Signed in pencil lower right
