About the work

Howson's "Head Study" illustrates a charcoal side profile of a male subject who is looking past his overgrown eyebrows and into the distance. The melancholic image is tended to by the artist with affection, created through the use of dark and light. This produced not only a three-dimensional character, but one with a story of hellish moments, a familiar theme within the artists’ work. In the act of rubbing away to reveal highlights on the subjects sullen face alongside mark making that reflects Rembrandt’s sketches “Head Study” has a hope for redemption that only Howson can create.
