About the work

As a rent collector for nearly 40 years, LS. Lowry had access to parts of Manchester and Salford which were off limits to most artists of his generation. His daily journeys into insalubrious parts of the city gave Lowry an almost exclusive inspiration for scenes of life at that time. 'Great Ancoats Street' depicts the weary working-class Ancoats area of Manchester in the middle of the 20th century, As the prices of original Lowry paintings continue to soar, so too has demand for his signed prints. The number of limited editions released during Lowry’s lifetime was relatively small and many have long since undergone damage or even disappeared well before owners realised their financial potential.
