Banksias (5) by Kristina Chan is a bronze sculpture featuring five individually cast Banksia forms, each finished with a rich patina. Native to Australia, the Banksia plant is emblematic of regeneration, with many species relying on fire to release their seeds. Chan created this work following her 2019 residency in the Blue Mountains, where she observed firsthand the effects of bushfires on the landscape. By oxidising the bronze surface, she evokes the natural forces of fire, decay, and renewal. The patina not only alters the appearance of the metal but also reinforces the sculpture’s central theme: the cyclical nature of destruction and growth.
