Stephen Johnston: Portraits of Metropolis | Friday 17th June
Hancock Gallery is excited to preview our first solo exhibition with Award Winning photo-realist painter, Stephen Johnston.
Implementing the juxtaposition between ordinary and mundane objects placed in unexpected environments, Johnston creates painstakingly intricate paintings that are far from ordinary. Often mistaken for photographs; When combined on canvas create quirky, surrealist compositions which are then captured with incredible detail.
Born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Johnston's paintings hang in several Corporate and Private collections around the world.
Johnston has enjoyed early success in his career winning various awards including; The De Veres Art Award, The Towry Award- best from Northern Ireland at the NOAC and The KPMG Young Artist Award. He has exhibited work in Belfast, Dublin, London, including the Saatchi Gallery.
“My work has been particularly inspired by the classic and modern surrealists and from observation of everyday life and objects, such as films, nature, books and stories. I want to engage the viewer in drama, intrigue and humour.”
