Sam Wood

'Capturing the aesthetics and pace of modern and historical life'

Sam Wood is a British contemporary painter. Born 1994, in Newcastle, UK, Wood's work captures and emphasises the aesthetics of modern life. He interprets the architectural and figurative identity of a place through oil on canvas.

With a sense of realism being the main driving force in Wood's work, he finds great importance in creating mood and atmosphere.

"I believe realism comes from connection to the viewer’s emotion as well as strong representation of a subject. I use impulsive techniques and employ a range of tools including squeegees, rollers, sponges and rags which create spontaneity and abstract application of paint."

In Wood's most recent work he has chosen to delve into archival industrial images of pit workers and ship yard workers and photographs of museum visitors captured first hand.
