The Conversation Between Yesterday & Tomorrow
Free-hand carved stoneware
19 x 15 x 5 cm
Qi, based in Northumberland, is an internationally acclaimed artist, ceramicist, illustrator and researcher celebrated for her original surrealist narratives. Her ceramic works aim to spark a dialogue between objects and illustrations, exploring themes such as identity transformation, human-nature interactions, feminist and cultural boundaries.
Working mainly with hand-built and wheel-thrown high-fire (1220°C) white stoneware, Qi uses freehand-carved and inlaid designs, featuring techniques like Huahua, Mishima and sgraffito. Rather than following precise plans, she carves freehand, letting organic shapes emerge. Starting from the form of each piece, she considers how curves and boundaries inspire her, guiding her in shaping the story and imagery.
Her work captures a stream of consciousness, embodying emotions and narrative layers that invite curiosity about the unknown, abnormal and asymmetrical. Qi’s ceramics encourage open interpretation, inviting viewers to engage with her circular narrative images through both touch and inquisitive observation.
