From exploring museums to devouring delicious meals, we've curated an itinerary that will ensure a memorable time for the whole family. So hop on the metro, and let the adventures begin!
9:30 AM - Arrival at Newcastle City Centre:
Use the quickest way to get into the city centre, the Metro where up to three kids aged 11 and under can travel for free on Metro, all day, every day, when accompanied by a fare-paying adult. The main stops for the city centre are Central Station, Monument and Haymarket. If you get off at Haymarket, you’ll find you're only a 5 minute walk away from your first destination - or you can get off at Monument and walk through the main shopping destination in Newcastle, Northumberland Street.
10:00 AM - Shaun on the Tyne Art Trail:
Head towards the beautiful Georgian townhouses on the corner of Jesmond Road West and you'll not only find Hancock Gallery but you can discover 1 of 45 giant Shaun the Sheep sculptures that are on display throughout the summer. Join the kids in a delightful treasure hunt as you explore the city, searching for the lovable Shaun the Sheep sculptures scattered around. Marvel at the creative designs and snap memorable photos with these captivating characters. It's a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to enjoy art in the great outdoors. Try to spot as many as you can as you make your way around the city, or make a full day of it and follow the map provided by St Oswalds Hospice (you can pick up a copy at Hancock Gallery) or download the app to discover more about the trail.
Whilst you're at Hancock Gallery, be sure to head inside to see our Shaun on the Tyne experience room - discover a world of art, learn about mischievous artists and how to make some mischievous art of your own. There will be activities and competitions to get involved with too, plus it's a completely free activity! Hancock Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery that celebrates renowned and emerging artists from the UK and around the world. Be sure to check out all three floors of stunning collections and exhibitions while you are there.
12:00 PM - Lunch on Grey Street:
Have scrumptious lunch in one of Newcastle's most iconic locations, Grey Street. This charming street, lined with elegant Georgian architecture, offers a wide range of family-friendly dining options. We’d recommend Pizza Punks - where you can make your own pizza with loads of different toppings to choose from or Fat Hippo, an underground award winning burger restaurant.
1:30 PM - Discovery Museum:
After lunch, take a short walk to the Discovery Museum, a treasure trove of interactive exhibits and engaging displays. Step into the world of science, technology, and local history as you and your children explore the museum's diverse galleries. From the immersive science maze to the chance to discover Newcastle's industrial heritage, the Discovery Museum offers an educational and entertaining experience for all ages.
3:30 PM - Afternoon Treat at Grainger Market:
As the afternoon progresses, treat the family to a delightful break at the historic Grainger Market. Bursting with an assortment of food stalls and charming independent shops, this indoor market offers something for everyone. Grab a bagel from King Baby Bagels, or a slice of cake from Pet Lamb Patisserie, and for the adults coffee from Pumphreys Coffee is a must. It's the perfect spot to recharge, indulge and support some of the best independent small businesses Newcastle has to offer.
4:00 PM - The Baltic Centre for Art
A visit to the Baltic Centre for Art is an absolute must for art-loving families. Situated on the south bank of the River Tyne, this contemporary art gallery housed within a converted flour mill offers a captivating experience for visitors of all ages. The Baltic showcases an array of exhibitions, installations, and interactive displays. They have a dedicated floor just for families too - with a sensory area for babies and toddlers, a grain pit and foam building bricks where you can re-create your very own Tyne Bridge, as well as toys and books.
If you're not ready to leave the city yet - you can get dinner on the Quayside, see a show at the Theatre Royal, go bowling at Lane 7 or crazy golf at Mr Mulligans. There is so much to discover and Newcastle upon Tyne truly offers an unforgettable family day out.
