As one of the UK’s leading figurative painters, the work of Mark Demsteader has reached an international audience now held in collections around the world. Epitomised by his use of vibrant pastel colours and delicate and yet powerful female figures set against a brooding, dramatic backdrop, Demsteader’s captivating paintings never fail to draw you in.
About the Artist
Growing up in Failsworth, Manchester, Mark originally trained as a butcher but decided to pursue a career in art, something he had shown promise in from a young age. His ethereal and alluring work has now gained him international attention. Demsteader has been bestowed with distinguished awards such as The Lyceum Prize and The Sidney Andrews Scholarship.
Inspired by the works of Rembrandt, Goya, and Vermeer, the butcher-turned-artist has been a determined Figurative painter since the 1980s, but Mark shot to fame in 2011 when Harry Potter star Emma Watson commissioned him for a series of portraits. Since then his reputation has flourished, with his work appearing in galleries around the world.
The New Collection
On the back of our first successful exhibition of Mark’s work in 2020, we were suitably thrilled to be able to showcase a brand new and highly sought after collection of Original paintings this month. The collection features Demsteader’s signature blend of drama and beauty, but taken to the next level. The portrait painting is even more delicate and on point, while the abstraction is pushed in new directions with the figure almost disappearing in a flurry of mark making.
There are touches of classic elements and hints at previous models, for example, ‘Reclining Study’ a tranquil and demure reclining figure, reminds us of the breathtaking work he did with Hollywood starlet Emma Watson in 2011.
With a vivid colour palette, heightened abstract elements and angelic, bright faces combined with the now signature Demsteader chiaroscuro, this is one of the most beautiful collections we've seen from the artist to date and one not to be missed.
View the new work online, or better yet, experience this bewitching collection in person, we're open 10am - 5pm Tuesday to Saturday.
