This hand-finished archival pigment ink print titled 'Cleanse' by Marcelina Amelia draws inspiration from my reflections on the modern world and human nature. It captures the spiritual journeys of self-improvement seekers and escapists—the fragile, emotional beings we are. "In my pursuit of healing, I use charcoal face masks and pore strips as metaphors for the longing to attain purity, free from past traumas and pain—a detox for the soul." - Marcelina Amelia

Norman Long is a master of the impasto painting technique. In this portrayal of our beloved quayside, the golden hour casts its warm glow over the scene, accentuating Phoenix House. This original oil painting captures a familiar view for both locals and visitors to Newcastle upon Tyne.

Sally Grant has mastered her own artistic practice over the course of fourteen years. Each sculpture begins with a clay model, enabling her to capture a spontaneous and fluid form. Following several stages of refinement, this initial clay form is then cast into either bronze or resin. Sally devotes months to completing each piece to her exceptionally high standards.

'Suppose' is among Sally's smaller pieces in our gallery, but it holds a cherished status as one of our favourites. Crafted from iron resin, this artwork beckons viewers to engage with it physically; resisting this temptation proves challenging! The material's tactile quality exudes a warm, unrefined tone, as if the sculpture emerged directly from nature in its present state. Sally consistently demonstrates her adeptness in sculpting organic, sensual forms, evident in both her modest and monumental work.

At Hancock Gallery, our appreciation for Japanese printmaking runs deep. It's clear from Sherrie-Leigh Jones' work that she's heavily influenced by movements like Shin-hanga and Sansuiga. These movements are centred around depicting idealised landscapes through woodblock printmaking and paintings, skilfully capturing the essence of mountains, rivers, clouds and mist.

Sherrie draws inspiration from her walks through the English countryside. Using a combination of photographs and painted elements, she hand-pulls them as screenprints, using graphite powder and pigments. Through her unique techniques, Sherrie achieves a distinctively Japanese aesthetic whilst depicting the English countryside. We are hooked by this fusion, it speaks to our appreciation for Japanese printmaking and the familiar charm of the English countryside.
