About the work

From the ‘Wild Flowers Collection’ by Juli Bolaños-Durman x Jorum Studio.
Photography by Shannon Tofts.

Juli was invited to respond to Jorum Studio’s 2019 collection, ‘Progressive Botany Vol. 1’. Inspired by in-depth olfactory research, a vivid interplay of textures, and the influence of her Latin American heritage, this exploration engaged all five senses in a dynamic way.
The 21 sculptures capture the wild, raw beauty and abundance of nature, particularly wildflowers. Made from deconstructed discarded glass, the pieces are reimagined through creative play and adorned with intricate hand-cut details.

Bolaños-Durman is renowned for revitalising waste materials by employing traditional cold-working techniques. Her work is deeply rooted in a concern for the wastefulness of modern consumerism. As an artist working with a material that can be restored, this project offers a platform to showcase both the skill and vision required to give new life to discarded objects. Ultimately, these objets d'art embody a story of untapped potential.

"Through my work, I want to invite the audience into a magical world of second chances, where discarded materials become the starting point. I’m interested in how the visceral relationship between the maker and the material shapes the creative process, transforming it into something new. These objects also pay homage to the innate human need to create with our hands, and how this act of making connects us to our past, present, and future."
