About the work

“The work is one of my largest woodblocks to date. Working at this scale, with such delicate paper, and printing everything by hand rather than using a press has certainly made this challenging. It takes a lot of time. There is always the pressure to produce things, to be productive. But the advantage to being slowed down by the process is you fall deeper into it.” – Matthew Lintott

Matthew Lintott is a visual artist with a specialisation in woodcut relief printmaking.  His work is an exploration of deep time and space, as witnessed through the past and the wild and remote. He views his work as a collaboration with the past, and with the ancient materials he works with. Inspired by myth, symbolism, and the geological perspective, Lintott’s practice is further informed by cross-disciplinary field research in geology and paleobiology. He uses recurring visual motifs of landscape and abstracted animal forms to create ‘modern relics’, which aim to offer the viewer a gateway to the ancient. He is based in Bristol, working from the Bricks community studio space, and prints predominantly by hand without the use of a printing press. This piece is a handmade woodblock print on Japanese Atsukuchi paper.
