About the work
“The print is about the tracks we leave for others to follow. The making of the print explored my memory of my relationship with my late dad. It’s inspired by one of his mountaineering photographs. So a collaboration of sorts…” – Matthew Lintott
Matthew Lintott is a visual artist with a specialisation in woodcut relief printmaking. His work is an exploration of deep time and space, as witnessed through the past and the wild and remote. He views his work as a collaboration with the past, and with the ancient materials he works with. Inspired by myth, symbolism, and the geological perspective, Lintott’s practice is further informed by cross-disciplinary field research in geology and paleobiology. He uses recurring visual motifs of landscape and abstracted animal forms to create ‘modern relics’, which aim to offer the viewer a gateway to the ancient. He is based in Bristol, working from the Bricks community studio space, and prints predominantly by hand without the use of a printing press. This piece is a handmade woodblock print on Japanese Hosokawa paper.
