Hancock Gallery presents Between Distance and Desire: Modern Figurative Art

A group exhibition looking at aspects of figuration and colour in modern art.

Between Distance and Desire: showcases the work of several international artists who draw their inspiration from an eclectic mix of sources. Employing ideas and motifs found in aspects of the Renaissance, the poetic and profound depiction of women in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, the examination of form and structure by colourists such as Mattisse and Hockney, through to the utilisation of techniques and source material used in modern illustration.

Between Distance and Desire:  presents drawings and paintings which blur the edges of figurative painting whilst also challenging the tradition of painting itself. Through complex narratives and a mix of contemporary styles, the artists in Between Distance and Desire: encourage us to consider how painting can reflect personal identities, representation and wider social concerns.
